CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The 29th-ranked Mercyhurst men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over non-conference opponent Charleston (W. Va.) on Friday.
The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins in 2 of 3 doubles contest before taking 4 of 6 points in singles action.
Cormac McCooey and
Unai Amilleta Gonzalez were winners at No. 1 doubles over Ben Lakeman and Joao Tayar, 6-2, while
Arseniy Sklyarov and
Claudius Zimmer took a 6-3 decision against Tom Andrews and Alek Gracin at No. 2.
McCooey, Amilleta Gonzalez,
Sebastian Pardo and Sklyarov were victorious at Nos. 1-4 in singles action.
McCooey was a winner over Lakeman, 6-4, 6-4, while the other three MU victors claimed three-set victories.
Amilleta Gonzalez outlasted Gracin, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1, Pardo defeated Tayar, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4, and Sklyarov bested Andrews, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
The Lakers (11-2) will retun to competition on Sunday at Fairmont State.
