INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The eighth-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team lost an 11-9 contest to ninth-ranked Indianapolis in non-conference play on Saturday.
Devin Piper had a five-point game to lead the Lakers (1-2), totaling two goals and three assists.
Benjamin Smith-Wilcox,
Caleb Kueber and
Nathan Grenon had two goals apiece.
Dom Perna also had a goal.
Sam Crusha made an assist.
On the defensive end, Perna,
Brandon May,
Will Agate and
James Rettinger picked up three groundballs each. Rettinger,
James Wittmeyer and
Haden Bates caused two turnovers each.
Goalie
Hunter Emerson had eight saves.
For UIndy (4-0), Parker Kump, Drew Billig and Matthew Johnson scored three goals each. Winning goalie Jarod Kimble stopped 13 shots.
Indianapolis broke a 9-9 tie with 6:05 to go on a man-up goal by Kump. Johnson tacked on an insurance goal with five seconds left.
The teams traded goals early on before back-to-back scores by Grenon and Pipher gave MU its first lead at 4-3. Those two goals were the beginning of a 5-1 stretch that left Mercyhurst with a 7-4 advantage with 5:16 remaining in the second quarter.
The Greyhounds closed their deficit to 7-6 early in the third quarter before a Smith-Wilcox tally pushed Mercyhurst's lead to two.
From that point, Uindy outscored Mercyhurst, 5-1. After a Kump goal gave the Greyhounds a 9-8 lead in the fourth, Pipher tied the game at 9-9 to set the stage for Indy's final two goals of the contest.
The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 9, when Molloy visits Tullio Field for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup.
