GAFFNEY, S.C. -- The seventh-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 contest to non-conference opponent, and third-ranked, Limestone on Saturday.
Nathan Grenon led the Laker attack with four goals and one assist while
Benjamin Smith-Wilcox totaled two goals and two assists.
Caleb Kueber added 1wo goals. Single goals were recorded by
Devin Pipher and
Zach Lorenz.
Piper,
Dom Perna and
Austin Robare contributed assists for MU (1-1) while goaltender
Hunter Emerson finished with 10 saves and five groundballs.
Also for the Mercyhurst defense,
Haden Bates compiled six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Brandon May finished with four GBs and two CTs.
The host Saints (4-0) were led by Tyler Papa, who had three goals and one assist, and Jeremy Burns, who came through with two goals and three assists. Winning goalie Danny Forren made eight saves.
After taking a 3-0 lead, Limestone held the advantage until the Lakers tied the contest at 6-6 on a man-up goal by Kueber in the second quarter. Kueber's goal capped a 3-0 by the Lakers.
The teams traded goals near the end of the second, forging a 7-7 tie, before Grenon gave MU its only lead at 8-7 with a goal 2:17 into the third.
The Saints answered with the next three goals, including a pair by Papa, who gave Limestone a 9-8 edge and then extended it to 10-8. That was the beginning of a closing 6-2 stretch for Limestone through the end of the game.
Mercyhurst will play its next contest on Saturday, Mar. 2, when it visits Indianpolis for a G-MAC contest, beginning at 1 p.m.
