ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team defeated Allegheny, 8-1, under NCAA Division III scoring rules in non-conference action on Friday at the Westwood Racquet Club.
The Lakers swept doubles play and then took 5 of 6 singles matches to secure the victory.
Cormac McCooey and
Unai Amilleta Gonzalez, who are ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, took an 8-3 victory over Zach Anderson and Wonjoon Cho at No. 1 doubles. MU's Nos. 3 and 2 pairs teams followed, in order, with wins.
Felix Schmedding and
Claudius Zimmer won on the third tier over Colton Johnson-Taylor and Mackenzie Knowlton, 8-3. At No. 2,
Arseniy Sklyarov and
Ruairidh Fraser teamed forn 8-4 victory against Matt Andrus and Cooper Miller.
Heading into singles play, MU held a 3-0 lead before Fraser tacked on the fourth point and
Sebastian Pardo clinched the team win.
Fraser bested Johnson-Taylor at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, before Pardo's 6-0, 6-1, victory against Miller at No. 4.
McCooey, Amilleta Gonzalez and
Roy Yaron added singles wins for the Lakers (4-1). McCooey defeated Cho at first singles, 6-2, 6-3; Amilleta Gonzalez won over Andrus at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-0; and Yaron handled Knowlton at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
The Lakers will return to action on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference home match against Ashland.
