OLEAN, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division I program Saint Bonaventure, 5-2, during non-conference action on Wednesday.

The host Bonnies (2-6) took 2 of 3 doubles matches, claiming a 1-0 lead through pairs play before MU (2-0) responded with wins in 5 of 6 singles matches.

Arseniy Sklyarov and Ruairidh Fraser teamed for the Lakers' doubles win, taking a 6-3 contest over Martin Eestevarena and John Rutkowski at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Unai Amilleta Gonzalez evened the score at 1-1 with his win over Lukas Malmberg at third singles, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8), before Sebastian Pardo claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, victory at No. 4 singles over Rutkowski. The Lakers took a 2-1 lead from there and led the rest of the way.

Three singles matches went to a third set, including the decisive tilts at Nos. 1 and 2. Cormac McCooey defeated Indra Patwardhan, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, on the top flight, setting the stage for Fraser, who clinched the match at No. 2. Fraser bested Martin Estavarena, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5.

After the match was clinched, Sklyarov tacked on another Mercyhurst point at No. 6 singles with a 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) win against Logan D'Angelo.

The Lakers will return to action with another contest against a D-I opponent. MU will visit Duquesne for a 4 p.m. match on Sunday.
