ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 7-0 win over non-conference opponent Daemen on Sunday at the Westwood Racquet Club.
The Lakers, who are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, jumped ahead by sweeping doubles play, taking a 1-0 lead, and then swept the singles flights.
Arseniy Sklyarov and
Ruairidh Fraser got the Lakers (1-0) started with a 6-0 sweep over Justin Milner and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez at No. 2 doubles. Then, NCAA Division-II-fifth-ranked
Cormac McCooey and
Unai Amilleta Gonzalez finished off the No. 1 pairs match with a 6-0 victory against Jose Williamson III and Fabian Wilde.
In singles action, Felix Schmidding recorded the first Mercyhurst point, taking a 6-0, 6-1, decision against James Schaab-Rozbicki at No. 5. Amilleta Gonzalez, who is rated seventh in the Atlantic, clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-2, triumph over Williamson at No. 3.
Sebastian Pardo, Fraser and McCooey followed, in order, with wins. Pardo won at No. 4 versus Milner, 6-1, 6-4. Fraser defeated Wilde, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2, and McCooey, who is ranked fifth in the Atlantic, went three sets with Martinez, taking a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, victory at No. 1 singles.
The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday with a visit to Saint Bonaventure.
