ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team fell 30-20 to visiting Seton Hill Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action at Saxon Stadium.
The Lakers got on the board first. A short opening kickoff set Mercyhurst up at their own 42. Six plays later Garrett Owen scored on a one-yard plunge to put the Lakers up 7-0 at the 11:46 mark.
The Griffins knotted the game with a 22-yard touchdown pass with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter. Mercyhurst answered quickly when
Doug Altavilla hooked up with
Clay Waldron on the first play of the second quarter for a 42-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked making the score 13-7.
On their ensuing drive, Seton Hill settled for a field goal making the score 13-10 with 12:30 left in the second.
Garrett Owens scored his second touchdown of the game with 3:45 left in the first half capping a seven-play, 48-yard drive.
The Griffins would score once more before the half on a Hunter Miller field goal to trim the halftime advantage to 20-13.
Miller added his third field goal of the game at 9:01 left in the third quarter cutting the Laker lead to 20-16. A pair of Griffin touchdowns in the fourth set the final.
Doug Altavilla passed for 188 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 56 on eight carries.
Nick Altavilla was his favorite target pulling in five catches for 69 yards.
Owens finished with 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground and three catches for 19 yards. Waldron added three catches for 70 yards.
Jake Tarasovitch led the Mercyhurst defense with 11 tackles and one tackle for loss.
Alex Zacharyasz added 10 stops.
Corbin Kessler finished the day with nine tackles, 2.5 for a loss and a sack.
The Lakers are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Cal U for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Vulcans.
