Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Mercyhurst field hockey team dropped a 4-3 contest in overtime to non-conference opponent Newberry on Sunday.
Clare Ahern,
Alexandria Shumsky and
Alexis Skibitsky had goals for the Lakers (1-1), but it was a goal by Newberry's Fari Kawonde that decided the game.
Katie Lechner and
Hayley Skidmore added assists for Mercyhurst and goalie
Victoria Triaga totaled nine saves.
After MU fell behind, 1-0, Skibitsky scored in the 21st minute to forge a 1-1 halftime tie.
Ahern gave the Lakers their first lead in the 40th minute, getting an assist off a corner from Lechner.
The host Wolves evened the score at 2-all before Shumsky gave MU its final lead at 3-2 with a goal in the 53rd minute. Skidmore assisted the play.
With 8:21 left in regulation, Newberry evened the game at 3-3 and sent the contest into extra-time. Kawonde's sudden-victory score occurred with six seconds remaining in the first OT period.
Newberry outshot the Lakers, 15-10, and held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Mercyhurst will be in action next when it visits Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent Indiana (Pa.) on Monday, Sept. 10.
