Defense Holds Strong In 14-7 Football Win Over Clarion

ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst linebacker Rocky Owens recorded an interception and a forced fumble in the Laker football team's 14-7 victory over Clarion on Saturday at Tullio Field.

Owens, who had seven total tackles, finished with 2 1/2 tackles-for-loss including one sack. His interception thwarted a Clarion drive deep in MU territory and his forced fumble ended the Golden Eagles' final possession.

Also for the Mercyhurst defense, linebacker Chris Peluso made three tackles-for-loss, including a sack. Defensive lineman Eljon Williams added a sack for the Laker defense, which totaled 10 tackles-for-loss.

Defensive back Jake Tarasovitch made the game-clinching fumble recovery and fellow DB Dante' Redwood had seven tackles.

For the Laker offense, running back Garrett Owens rushed 21 times for 112 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. Fellow back Fredrick Green totaled 21 carries for 60 yards.

The visiting Golden Eagles (4-6, 2-5) opened the scoring on a 3-yard run by quarterback Tanner Jones in the first quarter. Mercyhurst pulled even later in the period on a 4-yard hookup from quarterback Doug Altavilla to wide receiver Clay Waldron.

Garrett Owens ran in a 12-yard scoring run late in the second quarter as Mercyhurst took a 14-7 advantage, which it carried into halftime and then through the entire second half.

The Lakers will return to action with their season-finale home game on Saturday, Nov. 10, when Millersville visits Tullio Field. Tickets will go on sale at the gate 90 minutes before kickoff. $5 for adults 12-and-over; $3 for seniors and students (non-MU students); and Mercyhurst students and 12-and-under free.
