Owens Scores Two TDs In First Half; Defense Records Three Interceptions In Second In Win Over Edinboro

ERIE, Pa. -- Running back Garrett Owens scored two touchdowns while the Mercyhurst defense recorded three second-half interceptions as the Laker football team claimed a 24-6 victory over PSAC West opponent Edinboro on Saturday at Tullio Field.

Owens totaled 210 yards on offense, gaining 148 yards on 30 carries and 62 yards on two receptions. He had one TD on the ground and one through the air.

Laker quarterback Doug Altavilla was efficient, completing 15 of 17 passes for 224 yards and two scores. He also had 11 runs for 46 yards.

Defensive backs Henry Caldwell and Dante' Redwood and linebacker Corbin Kessler had interceptions for Mercyhurst in the second half, enabling the hosts to close out the win.

Also on defense, defensive back Jake Tarasovitch had nine total tackles. Linebacker Rocky Owens added eight tackles, including two for-loss, while linebackers Chris Peluso and Kaz Struna recorded sacks.

On offense, wide receivers Nick Altavilla and Clay Waldron and tight end Bryce Mostoller had three receptions each for 57, 30 and 22 yards, respectively.

The Lakers (2-4, 1-2) scored the game's first 17 points, beginning on a 26-yard field goal by kicker Mark Shafer Jr.

Owens helped push the MU advantage to 10-0 with a 60-yard TD reception from Doug Altavilla. That capped a seven-play, 84-yard drive.

Owens had a 13-yard run early in the second half, finishing off a seven-play, 76-yard scoring drive by the Lakers.

After a pair of EU field goals in the second quarter, Doug Altavilla found running back Fredrick Green for a 22-yard touchdown hookup as Mercyhurst took a 24-6 lead and recorded the game's final points.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, with a PSAC West game at Seton Hill.
