Tough Second Half Dooms Football At SHU

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team suffered a 34-33 loss to PSAC West opponent Seton Hill on Saturday.

Laker wide receiver Clay Waldron had four receptions for 120 yards while both wide receiver Nick Altavilla and running back Theophilus Blackston III had touchdown receptions. Running back Fredrick Green finished with 18 carries for 90 yards and one score.

Also for the Mercyhurst offense, quarterback Doug Altavilla completed 14 of 26 passes for 237 yards and two TDs.

On defense, linebacker Corbin Kessler led the way with 10 total tackles and two pass breakups. Defensive back Dante' Redwood had an interception and defensive lineman Austin Drew registered a sack. Linebacker Chris Peluso and defensive lineman Uwaila Omorogbe combined on a sack.

Redwood also ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

The Lakers (2-5, 1-3) held a 31-7 third-quarter lead before the host Griffins (1-6, 1-3) rattled off 27 straight points to take the lead for good.

SHU took a 7-3 lead early in the second half before Redwood recorded a 96-yard kickoff-return touchdown. That began a stretch of 28 consecutive points for the Lakers.

Late in the second quarter, Blackston caught a 3-yard TD pass from Doug Altavilla and then Doug Altavilla made a 20-yard touchdown throw to brother Nick Altavilla as MU took a 24-7 advantage into halftime.

Green had a 7-yard touchdown run on the Lakers' first possession of the second half.

Seton Hill wide receiver Ardell Brown had three touchdowns -- two on receptions and one on a punt return. His 69-yard punt return occurred with 2:13 remaining in regulation and helped the hosts to a 34-31 lead.

The Griffins took a safety with 19 seconds remaining and then took a free kick before Mercyhurst ran two plays on its final possession. Brown, shifting to defense, secured the SHU win with an interception.

Mercyhurst will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20, with a 12 p.m. home PSAC West contest against California (Pa.).
