McCooey, Gonzalez Place Fifth At ITA Oracle Cup

ROME, Ga. -- The Mercyhurst men's tennis doubles team of junior Cormac McCooey and sophomore Unai Amilleta Gonzalez placed fifth at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Oracle Cup, which took place Thursday and Friday at the Rome Tennis Center.

The Laker pair opened play with a 6-3, 6-1, loss to the top-seeded team of Avaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga of Columbus State. That sent McCooey and Amilleta Gonzalez to consolation play, where they won two straight matches.

The Mercyhurst duo was paired against Michele Fenoaltea and Eymeric Chevalier of Concordia (N.Y.) -- the same school which defeated the MU men in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 in the spring.

This time, the Lakers were triumphant in come-from-behind fashion, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-7. Concordia had rallied after it was down a service break before the Mercyhurst pair bounced back with strong serves and consistent volleys to win the second set and then claim the tiebreaker.

In the fifth-place match, McCooey and Amilleta Gonzalez defeated Indianapolis's Dario Huber and Matej Kostadinov, 6-4, 7-6 (7). The Laker team got an early break and held on in the first set and then won the back-and-forth second set in a tiebreaker.

"It was a great tournament for our guys," said Mercyhurst coach Jerome Simon. "This was the first time we had advanced to the national site on the men's side and to come away with a couple quality wins was a nice accomplishment.

"Their mental mindset and strong strategy helped them compete well against quality opponents. There are no easy matches once you get this far. Everyone is good as they were all regional champions."
