ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst wrestling team claimed its tenth straight win by defeating Seton Hill 30-16 on Wednesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The Lakers remain undefeated in dual meet competition moving onto a 10-0 record while jumping to a 4-0 PSAC record.
The Lakers claimed six of ten bouts earning bonus points, in four of them. No. 12
Logan Grass (149 pounds),
Owen Watkins (157), and
Dakota DesLauriers (184) all picked up falls for Mercyhurst, for a total of 18 team points.
Jacob Robb also earned six team points earning a forfeit at heavyweight.
Eric Bartos (125 pounds) and
Kevin Kinyua (141 pounds) both picked up decisions for the Lakers.
Bartos started the Lakers out with a 3-0 lead at the end of the 125 pound bout earning a 5-3 decision over Vincent Distefanis.
Rodney Sunday would knot the action at 3-3 when he earned a 10-4 decision over
Aidan Burke at 133 pounds. This would be as close as the visiting Griffins (12-3, 5-2 PSAC) would come to claiming the lead and winning the match.
Kinyua trailed 5-6 going into the final minute in a tightly contest match against Alan Diltz at 141 pounds. Kinyua earned a late third period takedown and secured a set of four near-fall points to cement his victory stretching the Lakers lead to 6-3.
Grass climbed to a 12-0 lead before locking up a third period fall over Joel Cawoski at a 149 pounds surging Merchyhurst to 12-3 lead.
Watkins pushed the Lakers to an 18-3, their largest lead of the match, with his first period fall over Logan McKoy at a 157 pounds. Watkins trailing 2-1 a minute and a half into the first period, was able to throw McKoy to his back defending a shot attempt by the Griffin grappler. Watkins was able to secure his fall from this takedown.
Zach Voytek (165 pounds) and Damon Greenwald (174 pounds) cut the Lakers lead to 18-13, earning a fall and major decision respectively.
DesLauriers picked up a first period fall over Thomas McChesney at 184 pounds. DesLauriers worked his way to a 7-2 lead before converting his final turn to a fall. This fall surged the Lakers to a 24-13 lead, and securing Lakers victory in the match.
Jake Temple earned the final victory for the Griffins defeating
Wes Phipps 8-3 pushing the Griffins to a 24-16 lead.
Setting the stage for Robb to earn his forfeit and end the match 30-16.
The Lakers will take to the mat next on Saturday when the host Shippensburg in PSAC action at 11 am in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
