Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Oh. – The Mercyhurst volleyball team went undefeated in the Notre Dame (Oh.) Invitational, by earning second day victories over West Virginian Wesleyan, and Notre Dame (Oh). The Lakers were victorious against West Virginian Wesleyan, in an intense five-set game, and came out on top in a four-set game against host Notre Dame (Oh.) With these victories, the push the Lakers to a 5-6 record on the season. Individual game recaps below.
Mercyhurst-3 West Virginian Wesleyan-2:
Mercyhurst won sets one 25-20, set four 25-17 and set five 15-9, West Virginia Wesleyan claimed the second set 32-30 and set three 25-22.
Shelby Chesko led the Lakers in the first game posting 23 kills, 20 digs, four block assists and one assist.
Katie Baird contributed 17 kills one service ace and one block assist.
Alyssa Zirnheld contributed 17 kills while
Alyssa Kling had three service aces. Chesko and
Makayla Mollé led digs having 20 each.
During set one
Alyssa Kling went on a five-point serving streak bringing the Lakers to a 16-10 which they would hold onto to for the remainder of the set.
Set two was a back and forth between the teams going into extra points in which West Virginia Wesleyan would emerge victorious. Despite earning a 17-12 in set three the Lakers were unable to hold of a comeback from West Virginia Wesleyan, who were able to march back to a 25-22 victory.
Chesko went on an early four point serving streak in which she aided the Lakers to an 8-2 lead. Mercyhurst would play from the lead, reaching eight points at its peak, from the rest of the set.
Mercyhurst took an early lead in set five and marched their way to a 15-9 set victory.
Mercyhurst-3 Notredame-1:
Mercyhurst was victorious in four sets over Notre Dame (Oh.) they would claim set one 25-17, set three 25-13 and set four 25-20, while Notre Dame took 25-21.
Baird led Mercyhurst in kills, having 15, Chesko added 14, and Zirnhled added 12. Molle led the Lakers in assists with 42 and service aces with five.
Mercyhurst was in a tightly scored set entering a back and forth with Notre Dame, taking their first lead of the set by breaking a 13-13 deadlock. Mercyhurst would hold onto this lead to take the set.
Chesko went on a 10-point serving streak in set three pushing the Lakers to commanding 14-4 which they used to cement their victory in set three.
Mercyhurst jumped out to an early lead in set four, reaching six points at its height, pushing past Notre Dame to earn their second victory of the evening.
Mercyhurst will return to action on Friday, against Millersville, at 7 pm held on the campus of Millersville University.
