FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The sixth-ranked Mercyhurst wrestling team fell to Colorado State-Pueblo, 27-20, before defeating Indianapolis, 24-18, and ninth-ranked Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 23-17, during the NCWA National Dual Championships. With their 2-1 record, the Lakers secured themselves a place within the top eight teams.
The match against CSU-Pueblo came down to the last bout. A notable victory from the match was No. 1-ranked
Francis Mizia fall victory over Pueblo's Jacobi Jones, who is ranked third in NCAA Division II.Â
Against UIndy, both teams won the same amount of matches, but bonus points from
Logan Grass, Mizia,
Michael Green and fifth-ranked
Andrew Welton gave the Lakers the edge to win the match.
In its win against UPJ, Mercyhurst, earned bonus points from second-ranked
Willie Bohince and Mizia. The match was tied 17-17 with two bouts left before key victories from
Jamar Henry (197 pounds) and Welton (285) lifted the Lakers to victory.
The Lakers will return to competition tomorrow against fourth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, at 9 a.m. on mat 14, for the right to wrestle for fifth place.Â
