University Heights, Oh.- The Mercyhurst Wrestling closed out their first ever season at the Division I level on Sunday at the John Carroll Open. The season consisted of just six opens, but helped the Lakers to get valuable experience for a young roster.
How it Happened:
Travis Browning wrestled at 125 and picked up a win as he beat Camryn Mitchell of Mount Union before falling to Jacob Sombronski.
Marcus Colson wrestled at 141 and was unable to pick up a win as he fell in both of matches.
Colin Scherer wrestled at 149 and fell in the championship bracket before he picked up a win over Evan Carpenter from the Cincinnati Club team.
Noah Adamson wrestled in the 157 bracket and grabbed a win in the consolation bracket over Alex Wojcik of the Syracuse Club team in a 2:00 fall. He dropped his next match in a 2:35 fall to Chance Kimmy of Gannon.
Chris Cibrone had a fourth place finish in the 157 Navy bracket. He earned a win over Kevin Saxton in a 2:37 fall and then won against Owen Grieger in a 0:13 fall. His final win came over Lydell Osbourne before he fell to Greg Shaulis.
Max Stedeford had a second place finish in the 157 gold bracket. Stedeford beat Diego Chavez in a 16-0 technical fall. He followed it up with a win over Denis Kodakov Gil.
Keith Mincin also had a second place finish. He picked up a pair of solid wins in the 165 blue bracket. The first was 12-6 decision over Calton Fisher of Tiffin. His second win was a 19-9 major decision over Nicholas Reilly of Gannon.
Jake LeClerc was unable to pick up a win in the 184 bracket as he fell to Kyle Sandborn of the Ohio State Club team. Josh Johnson-Cantrel didn't grab a win in the 285 bracket, but
Joey Baronick and
Gino Guerrisi had some strong performances at the open. Guerrisi beat Jerry Johnson of Mount Union in the championship bracket before falling to Kyle Combs of Ohio State. Baronick fell in the championship bracket, but picked up three wins, including an 8-0 major decision over Guerrisi.
The competition served as the final one of the 2024-2025 season for Mercyhurst as they continue to immerse themselves in Division I.
