Football To Continue Rivalry With Gannon In Front Of National Audience

ERIE, Pa. – The entire country will get to see what it's like to fight for the Niagara Cup this year.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has notified Mercyhurst University and Gannon University that their football game at Tullio Field on Saturday, October 10 has been selected as the NCAA Division II Showcase Game of the Week.

The Battle for the Niagara Cup will be produced by the American Sports Network. The NCAA and American Sports Network has partnered to create The Division II Football Showcase with one Division II football game to serve as its featured game in each of the 11 weeks of the 2015 regular season.

The broadcast is offered to all networks owned by Sinclair Broadcasting throughout the United States and will also be streamed nationwide, free of charge, on ncaa.com. Locally, the CW has agreed to carry the rivalry game live. The complete list of channels that pick up the game will be announced on Monday, October 5.

Mercyhurst enters the contest with possession of the Niagara Cup after consecutive victories in 2012 (38-29), 2013 (51-21), and 2014 (45-38). Gannon last raised the Niagara Cup after a 30-27 win at Tullio Field in 2011. The Lakers hold a 12-5-1 all-time series lead over the Golden Knights.

The game is expected to be a highlight of the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) schedule. Gannon was voted by the league's coaches as the preseason favorite in the PSAC Western Division at the conference media day on Monday. Slippery Rock was picked second with Mercyhurst following in third place.

Gannon and Slippery Rock shared the PSAC Western Division regular-season crown last season with 7-2 conference records. Mercyhurst finished only one game back with a 6-3 PSAC mark.
