#7 Field Hockey Hammers Dowling Saturday Afternoon

OAKDALE, N.Y.- The #7 Mercyhurst field hockey team won, 6-0, at Dowling Saturday afternoon. The Lakers scored six second-half goals to pick up a non-conference road win.
 
In the first half, the Lakers dominated possession. They earned eight penalty corners in the first twenty minutes. On the eighth try, Tracey Mason inserted to Katlyn Heitzhaus, who put a shot on goal. Emily Koestler then came in and knocked the ball into the cage, giving Mercyhurst a 1-0 edge midway through the period.
 
Mason inserted another penalty corner in the opening minutes of the second half. This insert found Kelsey Lovelace, who drilled a shot into the net, making it 2-0 1:34 into the frame. Just over two minutes later, Lovelace scored again, deflecting a shot past the Dowling goal for a 3-0 lead.
 
The Lakers' momentum continued, as another Mason penalty corner led to a Meghan Smith goal in the 41st minute.
 
Blair Pembleton got in on the scoring soon after, putting the visitors ahead, 5-0. In the 55th minute, another penalty corner led to a Laker goal. Samantha Siegferth cashed in, scoring from 10 yards out for a 6-0 margin.
 
The Lakers outshot Dowling, 21-1, and recorded 23 penalty corners to just one for the Lions. The 23 corner attempts are the most by a Laker unit in at least 10 seasons.
 
Mercyhurst improved to 4-4 with the victory. It will host Kutztown on Saturday, October 5. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest is set for a 9:30 a.m. start at Tullio Field.
