Men's Tennis Opens Season With Loss At Allegheny, 7-2

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University men's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 loss at Allegheny College. The Gators improved to 2-1 on the young campaign.

Mercyhurst got its lone singles victory from sophomore Robert Rizea, who outlasted Allegheny's Tyler Triolo in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

The Lakers came close in several other singles matches but could not break through with another victory on the day. Freshman Ross Molinaro IV lost after winning the first set in his #6 singles match against Allegheny's Daniel Conroy - 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. Freshman Daniel Gimenez also put up a fight at #3 singles, but fell short to the Gators' Alexander Hurtuk, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

In doubles, Mercyhurst got its other win on the afternoon from the duo of Rizea and fellow sophomore Travis Beck, but they had to go extras to do so. The Laker duo outlasted Triolo and Patrick Cole, 9-8 (9-7).

The Lakers will next be competing the ITA Championships, hosted by Mercyhurst, at the Pennbriar Athletic Club on Friday, September 27 through Sunday, September 29.
