Coach
Chris Ryan will look to lead the Lakers to their second national title in three seasons. In 2013, Mercyhurst is 18-0, having won the regular season and tournament championships in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The Lakers have won six games by one goal, including thrilling overtime victories in each of the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. They have beaten 10 teams with 10 wins and have beaten eight teams ranked in the most recent national poll-both numbers lead Division II.
Le Moyne has a 17-2 record, including a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title. The Dolphins won at LIU-Post in overtime and then took a 16-13 decision at Adelphi to advance to the NCAA Championship. They made their case for the NCAA Tournament with wins over Limestone, Merrimack, and Adelphi-all teams ranked in the top six of the last national poll.
Mercyhurst is led by a senior class that has gone 58-4 in their careers. Two members of that class were recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) this week.
Brian Scheetz was named Second Team All-American and
Zac Reid picked up Honorable Mention All-American plaudits. Both were also selected to the USILA Scholar All-American Team. A junior,
Andrew Wagner, had a big week as well, earning USILA Defensive Player of the Year honors after being chosen a First Team All-American Monday.
Andrew Chadderdon and Gerald O'Brien both received Second Team All-American recognition for Le Moyne. Tyler Prevost and Alex Cameron-Carter were each Honorable Mention picks. The Dolphin senior class has posted a 61-7 record dating back to 2010.
Le Moyne leads the all-time series, 6-0. It won, 11-5, over Mercyhurst in 2009-the last meeting between the programs. The Dolphins also took a 6-5 decision in the 2007 NCAA Championship.
Scheetz paces the Laker attack with 46 assists and 72 points.
Brady Heseltine and
Jake McAndrew have combined for 78 goals on the front line. Reid has 29 goals and 14 assists, while
James Chayka has 26 goals and 14 helpers at the midfield spot.
Deven Alves has added 12 goals and 16 assists. Wagner is the team's top defender and has recorded 25 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
Patrick Maloney has 34 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers, while long-stick midfielder
Ryan Sullivan has 35 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers. Specialist
Mitch McAvoy has a team-high 88 ground balls and has won 65.3 percent of his faceoffs this year. In goal,
Michael Grace has an 8.11 goals against average and a .550 save percentage. In his career, Grace is 31-1 as the starting goalie.
Le Moyne features a balanced attack, as eight Dolphins have at least 20 points this season. Prevost is the top point-scorer with 40 assists and 58 points. Nate Frechette is tied with Chadderdon for the team lead with 29 goals. Kam Bumpus has had a strong year on faceoffs, winning 61.1 percent and collecting 114 ground balls. O'Brien leads the Dolphins with 21 caused turnovers defensively. Jeff White started all 19 games in net, allowing 5.30 goals per game and compiling a .556 save percentage.
Coach Dan Sheehan's group leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing 5.32 goals per game. The Lakers give up 7.50 per outing, good for fifth in Division II. Mercyhurst ranks fourth in scoring at 13.72 goals and Le Moyne is seventh at 13 goals per match. Penalties will be a key factor Sunday, as each team has a potent man-up offense. The Dolphins stand third, converting 41.5 percent of their opportunities. The Lakers are sixth at 39 percent this year.
Mercyhurst is looking to become the fifth team in the 29-year history of the Division II tournament to post an undefeated national title season. The last squad to achieve the feat was Le Moyne in 2006. No team in Division II history has won 19 games in an NCAA title season. The Lakers have a 32-game regular season winning streak, dating back to 2011.
In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lakers rallied from a 9-7 fourth-quarter deficit against Lake Erie College.
Cory Becker tied the game late in the fourth and then Heseltine scored with 1:47 left in overtime. In the semifinals last weekend, Limestone took a 17-15 edge with five minutes to play. Reid scored his career-high seventh goal with 58 seconds left to cut the deficit. The Saints won the ensuing faceoff and attempted to run out the clock. Wagner and Maloney forced a turnover in the right corner of the field and triggered a break-out for the offense. Sullivan caught Maloney's outlet and pitched it to Chayka, who sprinted in for the tying goal with 4.1 seconds remaining. Alves won it with 2:56 showing on the clock in overtime. The 18-17 win was an all-time classic and featured the second-most goals in Mercyhurst history. It was also the highest-scoring NCAA Division II Tournament mat since 1980. In the 29-year history of the tournament, there have been eight OT contests. The Lakers' last three tournament matches have gone to extra time.
