Men's Soccer Shuts Out University of Pitt-Johnstown 7-0

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University men's soccer team collected their third shutout of the season, beating the University of Pitt-Johnstown 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win, the Lakers improved to 5-1-0 in the PSAC and 8-3-0 overall this season.
 
The Lakers scored early and often starting just over one minute into the contest.  Freshman Joseph Korb tallied his second goal of the season after finishing a cross from senior Ewan Sharp.
 
Sharp then tallied a goal of his own,  his first of the season, after junior Fernando Martinez attempted a shot to goalkeeper Tim Ofman.  The Lakers were up 2-0 at the 8:10 mark.
 
Junior Dane Rimko scored his first goal of the game after an identical play at the 22:42 mark.  Freshman Gergory Andrews tallied the assist.
 
The Lakers scored three more goals before the end of the first half.  Korb tallied his second goal of the contest at the 36:14 mark.  Freshman Danny Deakin passed to Fernando Martinez who then chipped the ball into the box for Korb. 
 
Just two minutes later, junior Ryan Lund tallied his second goal of the season after deflecting a corner kick into the bottom of the net.  Rimko and freshman Michael Dirienzo tallied the assists.
  
Mercyhurst did not allow Pitt-Johnstown a single shot on goal in the first half.  The Lakers also out-cornered Pitt-Johnstown 6-0. 
 
Two minutes into the second half, sophomore Kevin Barry made a cross into the box for Rimko to knock home.  Deakin finished the scoring at the 62:40 mark..
  
The Lakers outshot Pitt-Johnstown 25 to four.  Freshman goalkeeper Nicholas Smith played the entire contest, stopping just one shot to pick up his first collegiate shutout.  Smith is now 2-0-0 in the season.

Rimko contributed two goals and an assist.  Korb also added two goals while Lund and Sharp added a goal and assist.  Fernando Martinez tallied two assists to extend his scoring streak to six games.
 
The Lakers host Seton Hill University on Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m.  The meeting will be the first between the two programs.
