ERIE, Pa.- The #10 Mercyhurst field hockey team lost, 5-4, to Kutztown Saturday morning at Tullio Field. Four different Lakers scored in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) home opener.

The Lakers controlled the action early, scoring the first two goals of the day.
Kelsey Lovelace's shot was stopped, but a resulting loose ball was knocked in by
Katlyn Heitzhaus, making it 1-0 after 3:05 of play.

Later in the half,
Emily Burns made a nice crossing pass to
Allison Brace, who scored at the 22:16 mark for a 2-0 advantage. Kutztown responded with two goals in less than three minutes to send the game into the half even at 2.

A few minutes into the second period, the Lakers struck again.
Marissa Faso inserted a penalty corner to
Meghan Smith. The senior received the pass at the top of the circle and unloaded a blast through the KU defense. The ball found its way to the back of the net, putting the hosts back ahead.

Jamie Koenig answered with her second score of the day five minutes later, tying the match again. In the 51
st minute, Smith dished to
Cayla Slade, who was cutting in from the right side. Slade scored for a 4-3 edge. The Bears had another answer, though, making it 4-all at the 56:51 mark. Koenig finished her big day with a goal 54 seconds later.

Mercyhurst outshot KU, 18-12, while Kutztown earned 10 penalty corners to 7 for the Lakers.
Jess Wess posted four saves.

The Lakers dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC. Kutztown is now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Mercyhurst plays at Millersville in another PSAC match on October 9.
