Volleyball Takes Four-Game Decision at Slippery Rock Friday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Mercyhurst volleyball team won, 3-1, at Slippery Rock Friday night. Sarah Vick led with 14 points as the Lakers won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener by scores of 25-21, 12-25, 25-16, and 26-24.
 
After winning two of the first three games, Mercyhurst took an 11-7 lead on a Vick kill in the fourth set. The Rock made its move, though, pulling even at 15. A pair of Vick points allowed the visitors to go ahead, 19-16. Sarah Wegrzyn, Lexi Stefanov, and Sarah Puckett each recorded a kill to make it 22-16.
 
Slippery Rock answered with seven consecutive points to take a one-point edge. Two Rock errors put the Lakers back in the lead. After a SRU point, Rachel Crittle finished a Kelly Vitt pass to put The Rock on the brink. Tai Lattimore closed the contest with an ace, giving Mercyhurst a win in the division opener.
 
In the first game, the Lakers took an early 11-4 advantage. Slippery Rock rallied, but points by Stefanov, Vick, and Wegrzyn kept the Lakers up, 17-11. Wegrzyn and Crittle each had a kill to make it 20-12. The hosts scored five straight, but Crittle and Camille Alvarez each scored. Kelsi Romatowski's kill made it game point and a Rock error put the Lakers up 1-0 in the match. The teams traded wins in the next two frames.
 
Vick had 13 kills and two block assists. Crittle added 13 points (11 kills, two total blocks), while Stefanov had 11 points (10 kills, one block). Vitt dished out 27 assists, while Lattimore compiled 21. Nicole Texido collected 20 digs, with Vitt and Lattimore combining for 29 of their own.  
 
Mercyhurst improved to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC. The Rock dropped to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Lakers play at Edinboro tomorrow. The PSAC Western Division match is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
