Box Score

ERIE, Pa. – Freshman Jack Watson scored two goals to propel the Mercyhurst University men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Seton Hill University. The Lakers improved to 9-3-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the PSAC and captured their third straight win. Seton Hill fell to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the PSAC.

After losing three of six prior matches on their home surface, the Lakers wasted no time in getting on the board. Senior Matt Campana received a go ahead pass from Watson at the 3:27 mark of the contest to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage. Campana approached the net from the left side of the field, took one touch after receiving the pass and shot the ball to the right corner of the net.

Watson tallied his first goal of the contest at the 22:27 mark of the half after he forced his way through the Seton Hill defense. Watson dribbled through two defensemen inside the penalty box and quickly took a left footed shot to the top left corner of the net. Watson scored again at the 39:05 mark when Mercyhurst was awarded a penalty kick. The Lakers led 3-0 after 45 minutes.

The Lakers defensive play kept Seton Hill away from creating any sort of offense. The Lakers as a team created 20 scoring opportunities while the Griffins had only one shot on net the entire 90 minutes of play.

Joseph Korb tallied his fourth goal of the season at the 64:07 mark to conclude the scoring. Watson created the play as he lobbed the ball towards the final line of the Seton Hill defense. The Griffins attempted to pass the ball back to goaltender Clint McElheny. However, Korb beat McElheny to the ball and chipped the ball over the goaltender and into the back center of the Griffins' net.

Freshman goalie Nicholas Smith made his third collegiate start for the Lakers and came away with his second straight shutout. He had to make just one save. McElheny started his first time in goal for the Griffins' and allowed four goals on 10 shots.

The Lakers, first in the PSAC conference, will host California (Pa.) on Wednesday, October 16 at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
