Wrestling Improves To 4-0 With A 32-15 Victory At Seton Hill

Redshirt senior Jeffrey Pollard pinned his counterpart from Seton Hill on Saturday, helping Mercyhurst to a 32-15 win over the Griffins.
GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University wrestling team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 32-15 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday night in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. With the loss, the Griffins dropped to 4-2 on the season.

The Lakers improved to 6-0 lifetime against Seton Hill, which will be joining the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference next season.

Once again, it was the freshman duo of Willie Bohince and Dylan D'Urso who got things going for Mercyhurst on Saturday. The pair spotted Mercyhurst a 9-0 lead after the opening two matches, thanks to an 11-0 major decision from Bohince and a 17-2 technical fall by D'Urso.

Bohince improved to 14-7 on the season while D'Urso moved his record to 13-3.

The Griffins would tie the match at 9-9 after a pair of victories in the 141-pound and 149-pound bouts. Freshman Joey Miller was pinned by Seton Hill's AJ Fisher before sophomore Michael Griffith suffered a 5-1 loss to Nick Nichols.

But, Mercyhurst would respond with four consecutive victories to give the Lakers a 26-9 advantage and put the match out of reach with just two bouts remaining.

Redshirt junior Tyler Berger started the winning streak with a hard-fought 2-0 decision over Adam Moranduzzo in the 157-pound bout. Senior Clint Schaefer would follow with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Tyler Mohlenrich. Redshirt freshman Angelo Bortoluzzi then defeated Brett Smith in the 174-pound match by a 9-5 final, before redshirt senior Eric Lundgren earned a forfeit victory at 184 pounds.

Berger earned his 10th victory of the season against just three defeats with his victory. Schaefer improved to 13-3, Bortoluzzi moved his record to 12-7, while Lundgren improved to 10-7 on the season.

After freshman Tyler Landfried was pinned in the 197-pound bout, cutting the Mercyhurst lead to 26-15, redshirt senior Jeffrey Pollard returned the favor by pinning Eric Minerd in the heavyweight bout for the final margin. It was Pollard's 11th victory of the season against just five losses.

Mercyhurst will go back into conference action next weekend with a pair of matches at Millersville and Shippensburg. The Lakers will take on the Marauders on Friday night, Janaury 11, beginning at 7:00 p.m. and then will square off with the Raiders on Saturday, Janaury 12, also at 7:00 p.m.

The matches will count towards determining a Division II champion in the PSAC this season. Each Division II school in the conference has five matches against the other Division II schools in the league. For the first time this season, the team with the best record in those matches will be considered the Division II champion of the conference.
