NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mercyhurst University wrestling team improved to 12-1 on the season after going a perfect 3-0 on day two of the East Coast Duals hosted by Newberry College. The Lakers went 4-1 during the two-day event, losing their first match of the event against UNC-Pembroke on Friday evening before rattling off four straight victories.
Mercyhurst defeated Belmont Abbey by the final of 43-6 on Saturday morning, handled Ohio Valley 37-6 in its second match of the day, and then edged Limestone 26-15 in its final dual in the early afternoon.
The Lakers won nine of the ten matches against Belmont Abbey to cruise to the 37-point victory in the opening dual of the day. Mercyhurst won the opening six matches against the Crusaders to jump out to a 28-0 advantage. The dynamic freshman duo of
Willie Bohince and
Dylan D'Urso got the ball rolling, spotting the Lakers an 11-0 lead. Bohince pinned the Crusaders' Patrick Mestrez at the 5:41 mark of the match to improve to 21-4 on the season. D'Urso followed with his tenth technical fall victory of the season with a 15-0 win over Markus Almeida. D'Urso moved his record to 20-3.
Freshman
Joey Miller saw his first action of the weekend and earned a 10-1 major decision over Clemente Narviaz. It was his first victory since December 1 and snapped a six-match losing streak. He evened his record at 10-10 on the season. Sophomore
Michael Griffith earned a forfeit victory at 149 pounds and junior
Ian Grecco followed with a 6-5 decision over Brandon Wilkins at 157 pounds. The win by Grecco snapped a 10-match losing streak.
Redshirt junior
Clint Schaefer picked up his first victory of the weekend with a 10-0 major decision win over Markus Cromwell. He improved to 18-5 on the season.
The Crusaders' Joseph Maumoynier earned the team's only victory of the match with a fall against sophomore
Grant Chase at 174 pounds. Mercyhurst finished off the Crusaders with three straight victories. Redshirt senior
Eric Lundgren pinned Westley Ruffer at the 6:44 mark of the 184-pound bout. It was Lundgren's ninth victory in his last ten matches. Freshman
Tyler Landfried earned an 8-7 decision over Jeffrey Lamer at 197 and redshirt senior
Jeffrey Pollard pinned Kelly Baker 68 seconds into the heavyweight bout for the final margin.
The Lakers improved to 5-0 lifetime against Belmont Abbey.
Mercyhurst continued its hot streak with a 37-6 over Ohio Valley in the middle dual of the day.
Bohince earned a forfeit victory to give the Lakers a 6-0 advantage. After junior
Ian Abplanalp suffered a 5-4 loss to the Fighting Scots' Josue Rodriguez at 133 pounds, Mercyhurst rattled off six straight wins to put the match out of reach.
Miller earned a 5-0 decision over Nick Varazashvili at 141 pounds, followed by a 7-0 decision by Griffith at 149 pounds. Redshirt junior
Tyler Berger picked up a major decision victory over Eli Stewart at 157 pounds for his first victory of the weekend. Schaefer picked up a forfeit win at 165 pounds followed by redshirt freshman's
Angelo Bortoluzzi's pin in the 174-pound bout. Lundgren finished off the string with an 8-4 decision over Nicco Niday at 184 pounds.
Landfried suffered a 6-4 loss at 197 pounds. Pollard followed with a forfeit win in the heavyweight bout.
Mercyhurst is 2-0 lifetime against Ohio Valley.
The Lakers wrapped up their perfect day with a 26-15 victory over Limestone to improve to 12-1 on the season.
The freshman duo was at it again, spotting Mercyhurst an 8-0 lead. Bohince went 5-0 over the weekend, finishing off the tournament with a 16-0 technical fall victory over Eric Rholetter. D'Urso, meanwhile, followed with a 6-3 win over two-time All-American Michael Magaha to finish his weekend with a 4-0 mark.
Miller would suffer an 11-4 loss to the Saints' Devon Jackson at 141 pounds, narrowing the Laker lead to 8-3. However, the Lakers won the next four bouts to take a 26-3 advantage. Griffith pinned Theran Goodale in the 149-pound bout for his fourth victory of the weekend, giving the Lakers a 14-3 margin. Berger followed with a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Chris Didyoung at 157 pounds. Schaefer pinned Ryan Buchanan at the 2:44 mark of the 165-pound match and Bortoluzzi followed with a 7-3 decision over Demetre Liguori at 174 pounds.
The Saints would win the final three matches of the dual for the final margin.
The Lakers moved to 6-1 lifetime against Limestone.
Mercyhurst will return home on Friday, February 1 to square off against Pitt-Johnstown at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The match will also feature Senior Night festivities for four Laker seniors -
