ERIE, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Mercyhurst University women's hockey team fell 5-1 to second-ranked Boston College on Friday.  The Lakers fell to an overall record of 16-4-1.  Boston College improved to 17-3-2 on the season.

Boston College dented the board first when Alex Carpenter scored her first goal of the night at 13:45 into the first period. Kaliya Johnson had the assist. The Lakers were outshot 14 to 3 in the opening period as the teams headed for the locker rooms.

Carpenter scored her second goal 37 seconds into the second period. The Eagles scored their third unanswered goal at 12:45 when sophomore Emily Field lit the lamp before the Lakers broke through goaltender Corinne Boyles.

Freshman Jenna Dingeldein scored the only Laker goal of the night, a power play, at the 14:25 mark of the second. Dingledein's goal marked her seventh goal of the season. Junior Christie Cicero extended her scoring streak to five games as she recorded her 12th assist of the season. Freshman Emily Janiga tallied the other assist.

Eagles' senior forward Ashley Motherwell scored her first goal of the night, and BC's only power-play goal, at 13:59 into the third period.

Mercyhurst was awarded a power-play at 16:08 of the third period and created some excitement by pulling sophomore netminder Amanda Makela to create a 6-on-4 opportunity.  But the Eagles ruined the strategy by killing the power-play. Motherwell then tallied an empty netter to complete the 5-1 victory.

Makela made a career-high 34 saves, but surrendered four goals as her record dropped to 7-3-1 in the season.

Boyles improved to 15-1-0 while making 17 saves and allowing one goal for the Eagles.

The Lakers power-play  finished 1 for 8 with eight shots on net.  The Eagles finished 1 of 4.  Boston College had a game total of 39 shots on goal compared to the Lakers' 18.

The weekend series concludes tomorrow, January 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
