Bestland, Janiga Lead Women's Hockey To Weekend Sweep Of Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior captain Christine Bestland and freshman Emily Janiga each scored a pair of goals to lead the fourth-ranked Mercyhurst women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over Yale on Saturday afternoon.  Bestland and Janiga helped the Lakers complete the weekend sweep of Yale by each having two goals and an assist.
 
Mercyhurst is now 12-1-1, on a seven game winning streak, and moved to 12-0-1 lifetime against the Bulldogs.  The Lakers have not allowed a goal in 234:25 and have outscored their opponents 35-6 in the last seven games. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, dropped to 1-9-0 overall.
 
Bestland, who was held scoreless on Friday night, was eager to get on the scoresheet early Saturday, as she notched the Lakers' first goal at 2:17 into the first period.  Sophomore forward Shelby Bram had the lone assist. 
 
The Lakers would extend their lead when Janiga scored at the 12:21 mark of the opening period.  Bram notched her second assist of the afternoon while Bestland picked up the other helper.  
 
Mercyhurst outshot Yale 15-7 in the opening period. 

Despite a five-minute major penalty to Bestland for boarding in the second period, the middle stanza was scoreless. With the aid of the power play, the Bulldogs outshot Mercyhurst 8-5 in the second, but still trailed 2-0 on the scoreboard.
 
Just past the halfway mark of the third, Janiga scored her second goal of the game on the Lakers' only power play opportunity of the game at 11:56.  Sophomore Vaila Higson and senior Jenna Hendrikx assisted Janiga on her eleventh goal of the season.  
 
Bestland and Janiga came together five minutes later to extend the lead to 4-0, when Bestland scored her eleventh goal of the season from Janiga and senior Gina Buquet.  Bestland now has 34 points on 11 goals and 23 assists on the season. She is tied with Janiga with 11 goals and leads the team with her 23 assists.
 
The Lakers outshot Yale 12-3 in the third, and 32-18 for the contest.  Mercyhurst was 1-1 on the power-play and stopped Yale's only power-play of the game in the second period.
 
Senior goaltender Stephanie Ciampa recorded her fourth shutout in eight starts this season. She blocked 18 shots from entering the net, and now has a 1.00 goals against average, and improved her save percentage to .951. She improved to 8-0-0 on the year.
 
Yale's Jamie Leonoff made 28 saves and allowed four goals as her record dropped to 1-9 overall this season. 
 
The Lakers will have next weekend off and will return home on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1 to host CHA-newcomers Penn State University.  Puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and 2:00 p.m. Saturday.  Following Saturday's contest, there will be the annual women's hockey fundraiser, Beef & Beatles.
