Women's Hockey Stops Last Minute Rally to Beat Quinnipiac, 4-3

Sophomore Kristine Grenier scored two goals to lead the Lakers in a 4-3 victory over Quinnipiac.

HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore Kristine Grenier scored two goals to lead Mercyhurst to a 4-3 win over Quinnipiac Saturday at the High Point Solutions Arena.  No. 9 Mercyhurst improved to 3-0-1 in the season.  The Bobcats fell to 0-1-1 on their opening weekend.
 
Grenier scored the only goal in the first period, when she received a pass from senior Jenna Hendrikx at the 10:49 mark.  Senior assistant captain Gina Buquet  had the other assist on the goal.  The Lakers outshot the Bobcats 11 to 8 in the first period.
 
Quinnipiac came out strong in the second, scoring in the first :16 seconds.  Bobcats sophomore Nicole Kosta scored off a pass from forward Kelly Babstock.  The Lakers then scored two unanswered goals at 13:07 and 15:00 by senior Stephanie DeSutter and Grenier.  Sophomore Shelby Bram notched assists on both of the Laker goals.  The Lakers would head to the locker room at the end of the period dominating second period shots 21 to 4, and holding a 3-1 lead over the Bobcats.
 
Senior captain Christine Bestland extended the lead to 4-1 at the 15:43 mark in the third period.  A minute later,  Babstock started the last minute rally for the Bobcats scoring her third goal of the season.  Quinnipiac would score their only power-play goal of the afternoon at 18:47 to continue the rally.  The Bobcats pulled their goaltender in the last minute, but could not get the tying goal.
 
Bestland is now on a four game point streak, scoring one goal and two assists over the weekend stretch.  Bram notched two assists, while five other Lakers had an assist apiece.
 
Senior goaltender Stephanie Ciampa improved to 2-0-0 in the season, and continues to be undefeated in her career 7-0-0, making 20 saves.  Quinnipiac goaltender Chelsea Laden (0-1-0) took the loss in net, making 35 saves on 39 shots. 
 
The Lakers will host Providence College on Friday, October 12, and Saturday, October 13 at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.  The home-opener is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and while Saturday's game will begin at 3 p.m..  The Lakers will also be having an autograph session for the younger audience on Friday after the contest.
