Emily Janiga's two goals lead No. 9 women's hockey to an overtime tie against Quinnipiac on Friday night at the High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden, Conn. The Lakers remain undefeated at 2-0-1. Quinnipiac ties their first game of the season, 0-0-1.
Quinnipiac started out strong, outshooting the Lakers 12-to-9 in the first and scoring the first goal of the game at 10:03 when senior Felicia Vieweg scored her first goal of the season. The Lakers answered back four minutes later when senior assistant captain
Kelsey Welch was able to find the back of the net off a rebound from sophomore
Kristine Grenier.
The second period would be a battle of the goals. Janiga would put her first goal on the board at 4:55 on a power-play goal. Quinnipiac would answer back with two unanswered goals, first senior Brittany Lyons at 7:28, then again at 9:41 by junior Kelly Babstock. Senior assistant captain
Gina Buquet would score off of a rebound shot by
Lauren Kilroy to tie the game with only :22 seconds left in the second, making the score 3-3.
Mercyhurst would take back the lead 4:28 into the third when Janiga would score her second goal of the night, off a pass from junior captain
Christine Bestland. Quinnipiac pulled their goalie with a minute left during their power-play and Babstock would score her 50
th goal of her career with the extra player and only :40 seconds left to tie the contest at 4. Regulation time would conclude, with Quinnipiac outshooting the Lakers 29 to 21 in the three periods.
Overtime would remain scoreless, with the Bobcats having two shots and the Lakers taking one. The Lakers would be one for two on the power-play, and would kill two out of four penalties.
Sophomore goaltender
Amanda Makela made 27 saves and allowed four moving to 1-0-1 in the season. Quinnipiac's senior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti starts the season 0-0-1, making 18 saves against the Lakers and allowed four goals.
