The Mercyhurst ACHA Lakers are coming off an upset series sweep of #11 Suny Canton University this past weekend at the Mercyhurst Ice Center, winning both games by scores of 2-1 and 6-3 respectively.
Friday night's contest was a defensive minded battle as both teams tried to feel each other out. The only 3 goals scored in the game came 51 seconds apart in the closing minutes of the second period. Mercyhurst would open the scoring off a power play goal from Gage Carrig. A mere 32 seconds later, Mercyhurst would go ahead by two off a rebound goal from Doug Stanton. J.R. Lafferty, Suny Canton's leading scorer would answer for his team 19 seconds later off a point shot. The third period saw no scoring as Mercyhurst sealed the victory 2-1.
Saturday's contest was more of a spirited affair as 87 minutes in penalties were assessed during the game. Like Friday, Mercyhurst would strike first and take a two goal lead after the first period of play. Suny Canton would answer back with two goals of their own in the second period as Mercyhurst found themselves in penalty trouble early into the start of the second frame. Both teams would trade goals early into the third period, before senior Mark Loecher scored his league leading 5th game winning goal with 11 minutes left in the game on a power play. Mercyhurst would add 2 more power play goals before the end of the game after Suny Canton fell into some penalty trouble late in the game.
The two wins give Mercyhurst a 7-0-1 record in ECHL league play. Mercyhurst will face off against Washington & Jefferson College Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center with game time beginning at 7pm. On Sunday afternoon, the Lakers will take on another league rival from the University at Buffalo in another crucial ECHL match-up. Sunday's game will begin at 2:10pm.
