The Mercyhurst ACHA D1 Hockey team spent this past weekend in ECHL league play against the Canisius College Golden Griffins, taking home two key victories, 10-2 and 6-3 respectively.
The Lakers gave up two early goals in Friday's match-up, but responded with 10 unanswered goals of their own before the final buzzer. As the game wore on, the Laker defense solidified and the scoring attack was initiated by sophomore defenseman Daniel Tremblay. Freshman defenseman Kaleb Schwab scored to tie the game before the end of the first period. Doug Stanton, Patrick Mayhew, James Knight, Gage Carrig and Chris Mandia added goals in the second period for the Lakers which included 3 goals in a matter of 19 seconds. The Lakers would add three more goals in the third to seal the victory.
The second game, played at the Dann Memorial Rink at The Nichols School in Buffalo, NY, would see the Lakers jump out to an early lead off goals from Mark Loecher, Doug Stanton and Kaleb Schwab. Patrick Schafer would add his first two goals of the season in the second period, and Jon Sears would add another, before Canisius would rally to add two goals of their own late in the game. The 6-3 victory gave the Lakers 4 critical points in the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League (ECHL) standings.
