ERIE, Pa. - The third-ranked Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team outscored Dominican 10-2 in the second half to overcome a slow start and record its fifth straight win with a 13-5 victory on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Tullio Field.
Playing in their regular season finale, the Lakers broke open a three-all game at the break with five goals in each of the final two quarters to improve to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in East Coast Conference play. They will now wait to see if they are selected for the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Tournament when the four-team field is announced at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 on NCAASports.com.
Celebrating the accomplishments of their seniors prior to the game, the Lakers got offense from all four of their classes as they sent their four-year veterans out in style.
Juniors
Kyle Kallay and
Ian Wild netted three goals apiece, with Kallay also adding an assist for four points. Senior
Trevor Rice found the back of the net once and totaled four points as well. Second-year attackman
Brian Scheetz scored once and assisted on two others, senior
Cameron McLean potted a pair of goals and senior
Andy Winslow and sophomore
James Chayka put on one-goal, one-assist performances. Senior
Kevin Coholan found the back of the net once, and senior
Cameron Edmiston and freshman
Jake McAndrew each added an assist.
Mercyhurst's second- and third-year players accounted for all of the scoring in the first half. Trailing 1-0 after the first, Scheetz evened the slate when he took a pass from Chayka on the wing and buried it past netminder Brendan Bonacum at the 9:34 mark. Kallay then wiped out a goal by Alex Jones and gave the Lakers their first lead of the game with his second of consecutive goals.
Jesse Peterson, who posted a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, closed out the half and knotted the score at three when he scored on a fastbreak with 35 seconds showing on the clock.
After the break, Mercyhurst made its move and started to pull away. Wild put the Lakers in front for good with back-to-back goals before Kallay completed his hat trick at the 6:34 mark. Coholan and Winslow then gave the home team a six-goal lead, at 10-4, with Coholan striking at 3:40 and Winslow beating the buzzer for the team's 10th score of the afternoon.
Wild and Chayka connected back-to-back to open the fourth before Dominican broke up the four-goal streak with Peterson's fourth of the afternoon at the 10:52 mark. Less than a minute later, McLean made it a 12-5 game with consecutive tallies at 9:53 and 8:42, and Rice closed out the scoring with 6:31 to play.
For the game, Mercyhurst outshot Dominican 38-23, including 23-12 in the second half, and held a 30-10 advantage in ground balls. MC also went 3-for-8 in man-up opportunities.

Zach Nash earned the win in goal with seven stops.
