ERIE, Pa. - Sophomore
Brian Scheetz scored five goals and totaled six points, including his 100th career at Mercyhurst, to lead the third-ranked men's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over Seton Hill Wednesday afternoon at Tullio Field.
Entering the game with 99 points to his resume, Scheetz became the 11th player in program history to crack the century mark when he assisted on freshman
Brady Heseltine's goal at the 13:59 mark of the second quarter. He then scored five goals over the remaining 43 minutes and 59 seconds to boost his career total to 105 and surpass class of 2010 midfielder
Tyler Burton for 10th all-time in scoring at the college.
Three other Lakers supplied goals in the team's fourth straight win (11-2), with freshman
Jake McAndrew scoring a career-high five goals. Seniors
Andy Winslow and
Trevor Rice both added one goal apiece.
Junior
Kyle Kallay and senior
Kevin Coholan combined to set up five of the team's 13 goals, with Kallay dishing out a season-high three assists.
After winning their first matchup by a single score back in March, the Lakers looked like they were going to play another close game with Griffins ending the first quarter in a 1-1 tie. However, after several Seton Hill miscues in the second, the home team took advantage of four man-up opportunities, scoring three times during a 5-1 run.
Both teams then traded four goals aside in the third, before Mercyhurst ate the clock and outscored the Griffins 3-1 in the fourth.
Senior
Zach Nash earned the win in goal with six saves as Mercyhurst outshot Seton Hill 36-28. The Lakers also held the advantage in ground balls, 27-25, and finished the afternoon 6-for-8 in man-up opportunities.
Mercyhurst closes out the regular season on Saturday, May 7, when it welcomes East Coast Conference opponent Dominican (N.Y.) to Tullio Field for a 1 p.m. contest.
