BLOOMSBURG, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team won at Bloomsburg, 70-66, Saturday afternoon.
Matt Lee scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Lakers past the Huskies in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown.
Luis Leao opened the scoring with a layup 34 seconds into the contest. Lee followed with a jumper and a three-pointer for a 7-0 Hurst lead. Lee continued his hot start with a layup for a 9-4 advantage.
Lee made another lay-in to put the Lakers up 12-6 with 14:14 left. The Huskies made their move from there, as Ed Hall converted a three-point play to make it 12-11 with 13:57 remaining. Leao answered with a triple followed by a
Steven Coleman free throw and a
Callon Dailey trey. Dailey hit another jump shot with 10:59 to play for a 21-11 lead.
Mercyhurst kept a comfortable margin for the next few minutes until Trevon Johnson hit a layup to make it 31-23 with 2:55 to go in the first half.
Bill Weaver came back on the next possession with a lay-in and then the teams traded baskets to end the half with the visitors ahead 35-27.
Lee began the second half with another trey and followed with a jumper soon thereafter for a 40-29 edge. A few minutes later, Lee's lay-in made it 44-32 with 16:25 to play. After a Dontahe Jordan three, Lee applied more pressure with another three-pointer to keep the lead at 12.
A three-point play by Johnson and then a layup, two free throws, and a jumper by Hall put the home team down 51-47 with 10:22 to go. Dailey nailed a trey that was quickly equaled by Lorenzo Christmas. Leao's lay-in and a Coleman triple made it 59-50 in the final nine minutes.
An
Andrew Rickard three put Hurst ahead by 13, but Bloom did not quit. Johnson's jump shot and a free throw and a layup by Hall got the Huskies within six with 2:10 left. Rickard made two free throws to make it a 68-60 lead.
Bloomsburg got two free throws by Jordan to get to 69-66 with five seconds on the clock, but Rickard made a free throw to ice it with four seconds left.
Lee led all scorers with 25 points on 11-16 shooting. He also hit three triples and grabbed five boards. Leao was next with 20 points on 7-10 shooting and eight rebounds. Dailey and Rickard each added eight points in the victory.
Bloom got 17 points from Jordan, 16 from Hall and 15 from Johnson. Webster grabbed 13 boards, but was held without a field goal in the loss.
As a team, Hurst shot 25-52 (48.1 percent) from the field and Bloomsburg shot 21-55 (38.2 percent).
The Laker win snapped an eight-game winning streak for Bloom, who had been unbeaten in conference action.
Hurst improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC with the win. The Lakers host nationally-ranked Bowie State Saturday, December 17, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
