Men's Basketball Takes Road Win Behind Lee's 27 Points

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The Mercyhurst men's basketball team won, 90-71, at West Chester Sunday afternoon. Matt Lee scored 27 points to lead the Lakers to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory.


 
Carl Johnson hit a jumper with 5:18 left in the first half to put West Chester ahead 29-23. Hurst answered with an 8-0 spurt that featured six points by Bill Weaver. He had a layup, two free throws, and a dunk to give the Lakers a 31-29 lead. The Golden Rams tied the match at 33 with 3:18 to go. Weaver converted two more free throws and Lee hit a jumper, while Terrence Ingram followed with two more free throws. Up eight in the final minute of the half, Lee capped the action with a three-pointer that bounced around the rim and in at the buzzer to put the visitors up 44-33.
 
Khalif Foster's jumper early in the second frame cut the deficit to 45-37, but Hurst continued its stellar play. Layups by Jamal Turner and Weaver extended the advantage and then Rickard nailed a trey to put the Lakers up 53-39 with 13:33 to play. Six more free throws gave Mercyhurst a 17-point edge. It held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.  
 
Lee totaled 27 on 8-15 shooting, including four triples. He also hit 7-8 from the line. Weaver added a career-high 21 points, hitting 7-14 shots. The senior recorded five rebounds and four steals. Rickard had 14 points and seven boards and Dailey posted nine points and five rebounds. Ouegnin scored eight points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists.
 
As a team, Hurst shot 24-56 (42.9 percent) from the field. It connected on 34-44 free throw attempts. The Golden Rams hit 44.1 percent from the floor, but they converted just 3-16 from downtown. Lance McDowell led the Rams with 11 points and 11 boards.
 
Mercyhurst (3-0, 2-0 PSAC) plays next at Lake Erie College on Sunday, November 27. The non-league contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
