ERIE, Pa. - #9 Quinnipiac made a second period goal by sophomore forward Elena Orlando stand up as the Bobcats defeated #8 Mercyhurst 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ice Center. The teams traded weekend shutouts with the Lakers prevailing 4-0 Friday night. Both teams left the ice with 1-1 records.

After being outshot 34-20 in Friday's loss, the Bobcats applied pressure from the start, outshooting Mercyhurst 15-5 in the opeing period. The Lakers didn't help matters by taking three minor penalties in the first twenty minutes.

After Mercyhurst failed to score on a Quinnipiac penalty early in the second period, the Bobcats solved Mercyhurst senior goalie Hillary Pattenden for the first and only time during the weekend set. Orlando's shot from in front eluded Pattenden at 11:56. Sophomore linemate Emily McKinnon and senior defender Bethany Dymarczyk assisted. Late in the middle period, Mercyhurst senior Bailey Bram clanged one off the pipe after being set up by senior defender and team captain Pamela Zgoda. Quinnipiac outshot Mercyhurst 12-9 in the middle period.

The Lakers outshot the Bobcats 10-5 in the final period but, despite several excellent scoring chances, could not light the lamp. Quinnipiac owned a 32-24 advantage in shots for the game and finished 0 for 6 on the power play. Mercyhurst wound up 0 for 3. Quinnipiac junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti picked up the win by stopping all 24 Mercyhurst shots. Pattenden denied 31 of 32 in a losing cause.

Mercyhurst hadn't been shut out since Cornell turned the trick 3-0 at the Ice Center last January. Cornell was a Frozen Four participant last spring.

Mercyhurst will take to the road next weekend with a pair of games at Minnesota-Mankato. The Lakers won't return home until November 2 when when they host Brampton in an exhibition contest in the first of five November games at the Ice Center.
