Lakers Win Against Millersville, Ship

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College volleyball team downed Millersville and Shippensburg by identical 3-1 scores in the second weekend of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon.

With the wins, the Lakers move to 15-5 overall, 7-2 against teams from the PSAC.  The Lakers look to continue their dominance of Eastern Division teams when they take on Lock Haven and East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

Mercyhurst dropped the second set against Millersville (25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15) and nearly swept Shippensburg before the Lady Raiders took third set (25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20)

Behind 10 kills each from Becky Leusch and Gretta Freyermuth, the Mercyhurst College volleball team powered past Millersville in the first match of the day.  Against Shippensburg, the duo again paced the Lakers as Leusch threw down 12 kills and Freyermuth contributed 11.

Adding support against Millersville, Becky Smith and Erin English each tallied eight kills while Justine Smith contributed three kills and Stacey Miozzi added a kill to round out the Lakers attack.  Setters Kiera Rebert and Chelsea Hennigan split the duties, with Rebert assisting 24 times to Hennigan's 10.

B. Smith continued her exceptional service game, leading Mercyhurst with five aces.  Libero Kendall Ashworth added three aces to the offense while proving a team-high 12 digs.  

The Smith provided excellent blocking schemes once again as J. Smith tallied seven and B. Smith added six more.  

Against Shippensburg, Stacey Miozzi tallied eight kills while J. Smith and B. Smith added seven and six kills, respectively.  Rebert again paced the setters with 25 assists, and Hennigan added 13.  Picking up her hot serving game from the match prior, B. Smith provided six more to bring her team-leading total to 29 on the year.

A trio of defensive standouts notched 14, 12 and 10 digs respectively in Ashworth, Rebert and Elyse Texido.  B. Smith proved a formidable force at middle blocker with five blocks while Leusch, Freyermuth and J. Smith each added three.
