Lakers Sweep PSAC East on First Day of Crossover Tourney

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College improved to 10-3 on the year after defeating Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Divison members Kutztown (6-3) and West Chester (7-3) on the first day of the league's crossover tournament.

The Lakers stayed perfect on the day after outlasting West Chester in a four-set thriller, 27-25, 28-26, 23-25, 21-25.  Mercyhurst had three players in double-figures for kills as Chelsea Jensen paced the Lakers with 11 while Amanda Balasko and Justine Smith each put down 10 kills.  Setter Julia Butler notched 41 helpers on the evening and came up with 11 digs.  Jensen also managed to be the team's digs leader as she brought back 14 on the night.  

The blocking trio of Becky Leusch, Becky Smith and J. Smith came through with clutch points as Leusch and B. Smith each finished with seven blocks while J. Smith picked up six.

Against Kutztown, Jensen again paced the offense with 12 kills while J. Smith added eight and Balasko and Leusch each deposited six kills. Butler chipped in 34 helpers and finished second on defense with seven digs to go along with Kiera Rebert. Libero Kendall Ashworth guided Mercyhurst with 13 digs. J. Smith led the team in blocks with five while B. Smith and Leusch contributed four each. 

Next up for the Lakers is a 1 p.m. crossover contest against Cheyney to round out the the Lakers final tournament of the regular season.
