Warren Breaks Points Record as Lakers Blank AIC, 4-0

ERIE, Pa. – What took nearly 69 games to accomplish only took senior Emily Warren 52 to break, as the veteran midfielder took over sole possession of the all-time points record with three goals in the 10th-ranked Mercyhurst College field hockey team's 4-0 victory over American International Sunday afternoon.

Celebrating senior day and the accomplishments of 11 seniors prior to the game at a rain-drenched Tullio Field, Warren and the Lakers (2-0) made the weather bearable for their fans as they outshot the Yellowjackets 19-5 and sent the class of 2010 out in style.

Entering the game with 72 career points, Warren only needed five points to tie Laurie Sienkiewicz's record of 77 set during the 2001 season. She got just that and a little more as she completed her hat trick with a pair of scores in the final 10 minutes of the game. The Amherst, N.Y. product pushed the score to 3-0 with an unassisted strike at 62:23 before taking claim to the eight-year old record with a far-post shot off an assist from classmate Megan Rasmussen at 68:01.

Warren now owns two all-time records at Mercyhurst after breaking the goals record with her 29th career score against Bellarmine on Thursday.

The Lakers quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals by Warren and junior Sara Wowkowych. Warren broke the ice when she chipped in a ball misplayed by AIC goalkeeper Kim Steiner at the 10:23 mark while, less than 13 minutes later, Wowkowych increased the advantage to 2-0 with a great individual effort. Wowkowych drove to the cage from the top of the circle and made it through two defenders before knocking home her first score of the season at 22:55.

Mercyhurst finished the half with a 13-2 advantage in shots and held the Yellowjackets to just one shot attempt on goal.

Sophomore Ashley Wiskup kept the Yellowjackets off the board with four saves to earn her first collegiate shutout and improve to 2-0 on the season. Steiner, on the other hand, recorded 12 stops as she fell to 0-2.

Mercyhurst continues its three-game homestand this weekend with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest against No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m.
