Women's Golf Takes Fourth Place at Home Inviational

Mattye Laurer posted a career-best round of 77 Sunday.
Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's golf team finished its 2009 spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Mercyhurst Invitational, held Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26 at Downing Golf Course. 

The Lakers recorded a score of 330 as a team for the second round, an improvement of 14 strokes from Saturday's total. Mercyhurst finished fourth with a two-day total of 674 strokes, three more than it took Allegheny's B team to claim third place. Allegheny's A team won the invitational with a score of 627, followed by Gannon in second with 641 shots. 

Mattye Laurer shot a career-best 77 Sunday and concluded her career with a two-round score of 164, good for a ninth-place tie out of 33 finishers. Arielle Chong carded an 82, her best round of 2009, to take 13th place with a tournament total score of 169. Vicki Bendus followed up her first-round score of 84 with an 86 Sunday, claiming 14th place with 170 shots. Kaitlin Brody shot an 88 in round two and tied for 19th overall with a total score of 174 for the tournament. Alanna Kirwan ended the invitational in a tie for 21st, shooting 85 in the second round for a total score of 175. Elizabeth Gallea registered 100 shots Sunday and finished in 31st place overall. 

Allegheny's Hannah Schonau-Taylor won medalist honors with a tournament score of 154 over 36 holes. 

The Lakers have concluded their 2008-09 season, and saw three seniors play their last tournament in Brody, Kirwan and Laurer. Mercyhurst will look to build on its strong play in 2009.
