Cameron McLean and junior
Tyler Burton combined for nine goals as the fifth-ranked Mercyhurst College men's lacrosse team defeated No. 9 Seton Hill, 14-8, Wednesday evening in Greensburg, Pa.
Both players marked big performances during key points of the game. McLean scored five goals, four of which came in the early portion of the contest, while Burton put away four scores later in the second half to help the Lakers secure their fifth straight win. Along with the scorers, junior
Michael Sciulli also put on a big performance, dishing out four assists.
Mercyhurst (7-1) did most of its damage in the first quarter, building a 6-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of the play. Senior
Mike Bartlett got the team rolling with an unassisted marker at 12:23 followed by McLean's first of the three in the frame at 10:08. After a second from Bartlett to make the score 3-0 at 3:11, senior
Aaron Manzer got in on the action, connecting off an assist from junior
Trevor Rice at 2:38. McLean accounted for the final two tallies of the frame, burying a pass from junior
Michael Dugan at 1:42 before tickling the twine unassisted with just 38 seconds remaining.
The second quarter saw Seton Hill outscore Mercyhurst, 2-1. McLean netted his fourth of the game at 7:50 while Dan Ruby cashed in with back-to-back goals at 6:33 and 5:57 to take a 7-2 deficit into halftime.
After the break, the Griffins tried to build off their momentum from the second with a score from Chris Horigan at 12:14. However, the Lakers negated the goal with four of their own during a two minute and 37 second span. Burton pushed the score to 8-3 with a man-up marker at 11:14 followed by goals from senior
Mike Thon at 9:48, senior
Ryan Arnold at 8:45 and McLean just eight seconds later at 8:37. Seton Hill closed out the third with consecutive goals from Justin Menafee.
The Lakers matched the Griffins, 3-3, in the fourth. Shortly after Will Robbins goal at 9:58 that made the score 11-6, Burton pushed the game out of reach with two straight goals at 9:29 and 6:08. He added his fourth following a pair of SHU markers to end the game.
Senior
Jason LaShomb stopped five of the Griffins' 13 shots on the goal to earn his seventh win of the season. Seton Hill finished the game with a 40-32 edge in shots.
Despite getting outshot in the contest, the Lakers controlled several statistical categories including faceoffs (20-of-27) and ground balls (36-33). Along with his goal, Thon was instrumental in the possession game, winning 14 of 19 faceoffs attempted.
Mercyhurst returns home for its next two games this weekend, hosting East Coast Conference foe Dominican on Saturday, April 4, and first-year program Grand Canyon on Sunday, April 5.
