No.4 Mercyhurst Drops 11-5 Decision to No. 2 Le Moyne

Rochester, N.Y. – The No. 4 Mercyhurst men's lacrosse men's team fell 11-5 at No.2 Le Moyne Saturday, as the Dolphins scored six consecutive goals during the second and third periods, handing the Lakers their first loss of the 2009 season.

The Dolphins scored the game's first goal just 1:39 into the first quarter. Mercyhurst answered with two goals by Ryan Arnold, taking a 2-1 lead with 2:59 remaining in the opening quarter. Kyle Plante assisted on Arnold's second tally. Le Moyne scored two goals to close out the first period leading 3-2.

Brian Welch scored an unassisted goal early in the second quarter to give the Dolphins a 4-2 lead. Mercyhurst responded at the 10:35 mark, when Michael Dugan netted an unassisted goal. Le Moyne notched three unanswered goals over the remainder of the first half and took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Le Moyne outshot Mercyhurst 25-10 in the first half, and Mike Rabbitt led the Dolphins with three first-half goals. Arnold's two tallies led the Lakers in the opening 30 minutes.

The Dolphins added three goals in the third period and held a 10-3 lead after 45 minutes of play. Mike Thon scored back-to-back goals early in the fourth quarter, pulling the Lakers to within five at 10-5, but Le Moyne added one late goal to prevail 11-5.

Mercyhurst falls to 2-1 on the season, while Le Moyne is now 3-0.

Arnold and Thon finished the game with two goals apiece, while Mike Bartlett and Plante added one assist each. Jason LaShomb made 13 saves for the Lakers, while Doug McIver recorded 10 stops for the Dolphins.Rabbitt led Le Moyne with three goals, while Jack Harmatuk and Mike Byrnes each added two goals.

The Lakers will open their home schedule Tuesday, March 17 against Pace at 4 p.m.
