Lock Haven, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team scored once in each half to claim a 2-1 victory Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Lock Haven.
Billy Colton and
David Miller each tallied in the Lakers' win, their first road triumph on the season.
Mercyhurst now holds a 9-3 overall record and is in second place with a 4-1 PSAC West record. Lock Haven falls to 4-6-2, 1-5 in divisional play. The Lakers have now won as many matches as they did in 2008, when the team went 9-6-2.
With the game in a 1-1 tie shortly after halftime, the Lakers wasted no time in taking the lead.

David Miller with a long diagonal ball to the far post, where Miller headed it into the net for a 2-1 lead at 46:14. The goal, Miller's first of 2009, proved to be the game-winner. The Laker defense held the Eagle offense at bay, not allowing any shots on goal in the second half. They defused a late LHU surge to win the match, 2-1.
For the game, each team attempted 12 shots, while the Lakers placed five shots on target and LHU had three shots on target, all in the first half. Mercyhurst took five corner kick to Lock Haven's three.
At the start of the game, Lock Haven got off to an early lead with a goal within the first 15 miuntes. Greg Shertzer dribbled around Laker keeper
Diego Gustin, shooting into the net at 12:59 for a 1-0 LHU advantage. Shertzer had scored the Eagles' lone goal in their first meeting this season.

Billy Colton with a through-ball in the 28th minute, freeing the forward for a chance alone against the keeper. Colton beat Chad Badorf far-post for his fifth goal of 2009, knotting the game at one goal apiece. The 1-1 tie held through halftime.
The teams played evenly throughout the first half, with each squad attempting five shots.
Gustin earned the win, his eighth of the season, with two saves. The Lakers have allowed just four goals in five conference contests. Lock Haven's Badorf made three stops in the loss.
Lock Haven played a man down for the final 62 minutes of the game, as one LHU player was red-carded.
Mercyhurst swept the season series against LHU, as they also beat the Bald Eagles 3-1 Sept 6. The Lakers won their first PSAC West road match Tuesday. The team had gone 0-3-2 in divisional games away from Mercyhurst since joining the PSAC in 2008.
With his goal Tuesday, the 35th of his career, Colton moves into a tie with Ryan Yurkovich for fifth place all-time in program history. Also, his 78 career points are tied with Jason Pedra for sixth on the career list.
Miller's goal was his second career tally, and second game-winner. He scored the Lakers' first goal of the season in 2008 during a 3-0 season-opening win over Seton Hill.

The Lakers return home to host PSAC East opponent Bloomsburg Saturday, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. Mercyhurst leads the all-time series, 7-0, including a 6-1 victory in their last meeting Oct. 17, 2004.
