UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Mercyhurst University (0-1-0) lost a close match to Penn State University (1-0-0), 3-2, on Thursday at Jeffrey Field. The Lakers held a 2-1 lead at halftime, but the Nittany Lions scored twice in the second half to secure the victory.
The first period began with the Lakers quickly establishing their presence as Alvar Silva converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute, putting the visitors on the scoreboard first. Maintaining pressure, Mercyhurst extended its lead in the 26th minute with a goal by Max Beech, assisted by Silva, making it 2-0.
Penn State responded in the 35th minute with a goal, reducing the deficit to 2-1. The Lakers' defense, anchored by goalkeeper Jaime Tedaldi, held firm despite multiple shots on goal from the Nittany Lions. Tedaldi was particularly impressive, achieving a career high with 10 saves during the match. The period concluded with Mercyhurst leading 2-1.
The second period began with Tedaldi making crucial saves to maintain the score level, denying shots from Penn State soon after play resumed. The Lakers were forced to adjust after Joe Chinchilla Sánchez was shown a red card in the 51st minute, playing the remainder of the half with 10 players. Even down a man, Tedaldi continued to be pivotal, stopping multiple shots from Penn State to keep the game tied.
Penn State capitalized on an opportunity in the 67th minute, leveling the match at 2-2. As the period progressed, the Nittany Lions increased their pressure, ultimately breaking through with a team goal in the 84th minute to take a 3-2 lead. Santiago Giraldo and Jero Bencomo both attempted to equalize for the Lakers, but their efforts were saved, leaving the score 3-2 in favor of Penn State at the final whistle.
Tedaldi recorded 10 saves in net, facing 24 shots throughout the match. Silva scored once and added an assist, converting his only shot on goal. Beech found the back of the net with his single shot on goal, contributing to the team's tally.
