Lakers Fall 3-1 at Lake Erie College

Painesville, Ohio – The Mercyhurst men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 after one half, and was unable to complete the comeback, falling 3-1 at Lake Erie College Friday, Oct. 30. Billy Colton scored his 13th goal of the season during the second half.

The Lakers began the game holding possession, switching fields effectively. Each team committed to a trapping style of defense, drawing several offside calls for both teams. Lake Erie had the better of the chances during the first half, and Scott Stuckey capitalized during the 31st minute. Stuckey kicked in a rebound off of a teammate's shot for a 1-0 Storm lead at 30:14.

With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, LEC's Justin Mihaley redirected a Stuckey cross into the net for a 2-0 Lake Erie lead, a lead that stood through halftime.

Lake Erie outshot Mercyhurst 9-5 during the first half, including 4-3 in shots on goal.

Mercyhurst had the wind at its back during the second half, and played several through balls to forwards Billy Colton and Paul Neill. During the 59th minute, Nate Stern played the ball through the defense to Colton, whose shot hit the right post. Colton then knocked in his own rebound for his 13th goal of the season, which cut the deficit to 2-1.

Late in the second half, Mihaley scored again, as Stuckey dribbled around the keeper on the endline before touching the ball to the front of the net for Mihaley, giving the Storm the 3-1 lead. Despite a late charge by the Lakers, Lake Erie held on for the 3-1 victory.

For the match, the Storm outshot Mercyhurst 14-8, including 6-4 in shots on target. Mercyhurst held a 7-4 edge in corner kick attempts.

Ryan Wagner made three saves for the Lakers. Jared Daly stopped three shots for the Storm.

Colton's 13th goal of 2009 gave him 43 for his career. He has passed Gary Weber and taken over fourth place in program history with 93 points. He has tied Nicholas Thompson for the team lead in 2009 with 27 points.

The Lakers began have concluded their regular season slate at 14-5. The team holds the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West, and will host Slippery Rock Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in the PSAC semifinal.
