Mercyhurst Falls to Rival Gannon, 3-1

ERIE, Pa. -- Mercyhurst took the first set 25-21 while host Gannon took the next three to complete a 3-1 victory over the Lakers (21-25, 25-11, 25-13, 25-16) Saturday night.

Gannon improves to 13-4 overall as Mercyhurst falls to 13-5 with both teams moving into a three-way tie with Edinboro for the third spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division at 5-2.

Despite hitting near . 300 in both the first and fourth sets, the Lakers attack percentage was just .089 on the night in comparison to the Golden Knights mark of .225.  Mercyhurst also fell victim to a potent Gannon service game as the Lakers recorded 13 service errors.

Becky Leusch was the only Laker in double figures with 10 kills in 24 chances and just four errors.  Amanda Balasko chipped in five kills and Becky Smith added four while a quarter of Lakers added three kills each.  Setter Julia Butler added 21 assists while Kiera Rebert posted five helpers and libero Kendall Ashworth notched three.

Defensively, Ashworth led the team with 16 digs and Smith put down three blocks.

For the Golden Knights, Morgan Reineke had a game-high 16 kills to go along with four a shared-game high four service aces and eight digs.

Next up Mercyhurst is a home match against Lake Erie on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
