Mercyhurst Edges The Rock, 3-2

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. --  The Mercyhurst College volleyball team snapped a three-game skid with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-14, 17-25, 15-10) victory over Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers complete the season sweep of SRU and move to 18-9 overall, 9-6 in the PSAC while The Rock falls to 7-20 overall, 3-12 in the PSAC.  Mercyhurst is now just one match behind fourth-place Gannon in the PSAC Western Division standings and two behind third-place Edinboro.

Offensive leaders for Mercyhurst included Becky Smith and Becky Leusch with nine kills each while Gretta Freyermuth and Amanda Balasko contributed seven.  Smith also contributed three aces on the night for the Lakers attack.

Defensively, Justine Smith had a team-high five blocks and Leusch added four defensive stands.  Elyse Texido led the Lakers with seven digs.

Next up for Mercyhurst is a showdown with crosstown rival Gannon on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.  The Lakers will honor the seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
