ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College field hockey team put together back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-September as the No. 8 Lakers defeated Limestone, 6-0, in front of a rain drenched audience Thursday afternoon at Tullio Field.
In a dominating performance by the Lakers, six different players combined for a season-high 16 points while the defense held the Saints to one shot and pitched its sixth shutout of the season, surpassing the 2005 squad for third most shutouts in a season. The 2001 squad holds the record with eight.
Senior
Emily Warren keyed the offense with three goals, including two on the first two shots of the game, and added an assist for seven points. Junior
Sara Wowkowych, sophomore
Rachel Sluberski and freshman
Megan Richards also produced scores for the Lakers, who now stand at 8-5 on the season.
Mercyhurst matched its offensive output in its game against Mansfield two days prior by scoring four goals in the first half. Warren put the Lakers up 2-0 on unassisted scores at 1:10 and 5:06 before completing her second hat trick of the season off an assist from senior
Jocelyn Montmarquet at 27:45. Less than two minutes later at 29:34, she found Wowkowych on the crease to give the team a four-goal lead and close out the first half.
After intermission, the Lakers added to the score with a pair of goals midway through the frame. Richards increased the lead to 5-0 when she connected off another pass from Montmarquet at 51:59, while Sluberski pushed the score to 6-0 off a helper from senior
Megan Rasmussen at 58:53.
Both goalies saw action in the game, with sophomore
Ashley Wiskup playing almost 52 minutes to earn the win. Freshman
Jessica Richards made her first collegiate appearance during the remaining 18:40. Neither netminder was tested as the defense held Limestone without a shot on goal. In addition to a 25-1 advantage in shots, the Lakers also held a 12-0 edge in penalty corners.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 17, with a non-conference game against Millersville at 1 p.m. at Tullio Field.
