Women's Golf Sweeps ESU Invitational

Delaware Water Gap, Pa. – Freshman Michelle Spiegel took first place and her teammates claimed the next three spots, as the Mercyhurst College women's golf team won the first-ever East Stroudsburg Women's Golf Invitational Sunday in an abbreviated 27-hole one-day event at Water Gap Country Club.

Originally scheduled as a two-day, 36-hole invitational, the tournament was shortened due to rain on Saturday.

Spiegel scored 130 over the 27-hole tournament to win medalist honors, while her three teammates claimed spots 2-4. Senior Kaitlin Brody shot 131, while seniors Mattye Laurer and Alanna Kirwan each fired 139 strokes to tie for third.

Overall, the Lakers scored 539 to win the team title, followed by West Chester (573), Clarion (589) and the host, East Stroudsburg, who scored 668 total strokes.

The win gets the team off to a strong start for the 2008-09 campaign.

Mercyhurst will travel to Youngstown, Ohio to play in the Youngstown State Invitational Saturday through Monday.
